FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
07/16/08

CLEVELAND, WI

Approximately 150 students recently earned their General Educational Development certificate or High School Equivalency Diploma at Lakeshore Technical College. LTC recognized the students’ accomplishment at a GED/HSED graduation ceremony at LTC’s Cleveland campus.

LTC Vice President of Instruction Tom Hilke was the master of ceremonies, and LTC Board Chair Cindy Huhn gave the charge to the graduates. LTC Board Member Jim Lehrke gave the commencement address.

Each year at the graduation ceremony, the LTC Community Service GOAL Award is given to individuals who supported the GED/HSED program. (GOAL stands for Goal-Oriented Adult Learning.) The 2008 LTC Community Service GOAL Award was given to Carol and Jack Myers.

Both Carol and Jack have devoted their time and talent to the Sheboygan Area Even Start Family Literacy Program. Even Start is a free family literacy program that helps individuals earn their GEDs/HSEDs and provides child care during class times.

The program is located at the Early Learning Center, Sheboygan, and is implemented by the Sheboygan Area School District in partnership with LTC.

Carol has worked with Even Start students for 16 years, providing hundreds of students with information about the program. Jack has been volunteering at Even Start for three years, helping students develop their math skills.

Carol and Jack were nominated for the GOAL award by Carol Benthien. Benthien is an LTC/Even Start Adult Basic Education/English as a Second Language instructor.

Of Carol and Jack, Benthien said, “Carol became the personal cheerleader for many of the students, and Jack has a great gift of explaining difficult math concepts in understandable ways. Both of the Myers have demonstrated the power of giving and caring.”

Individuals who have not completed high school and want to seek more education and improve their employability may earn a GED or an HSED to open doors to their future.
