Lakeshore Technical College hosted a graduation ceremony recently to recognize area high school students who completed the Wisconsin Youth Apprenticeship program.

Youth apprenticeship is a statewide work-based learning system that prepares high school juniors and seniors for work by giving them a combination of college-level classroom instruction and paid on-the-job training.

The Lakeshore Area School-To-Work Consortium offers area high school students opportunities to learn and work in the following occupational areas: automotive technician, drafting, finance, health, industrial equipment, lodging management, machine tool and welding.

Among the employers who sponsor area youth apprentices are: Frank Zimmermann Farms, Gasper’s Auto Clinic, HUI, Inn on Woodlake, Kohler Company, M&I Bank, Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center, Sheboygan Senior Community, UnitedOne Credit Union and others.

The Lakeshore Employers’ Association Partnership for Education and the Lakeshore Area School-To-Work Consortium funded the ceremony.

The consortium includes the following education districts: Cedar Grove, Elkhart Lake/Glenbeulah, Howards Grove, Kiel, Kohler, LTC, Manitowoc Lutheran, New Holstein, Oostburg, Plymouth, Sheboygan Area Lutheran, Sheboygan Area School District and Sheboygan Falls.

The youth apprenticeship program provides most graduates with a state-recognized skill certificate from the Department of Workforce Development, high school graduation credits and three to 19 technical college credits in occupational programs.

Student applications for the youth apprenticeship program are accepted every spring throughout the Lakeshore Area School-To-Work Consortium districts. Parents and employers who want more information about the Wisconsin Youth Apprenticeship program may contact LTC Youth Apprenticeship Coordinator Linda Fitch at 920-693-1233 or linda.fitch@gotoltc.edu.
