Federal Financial Aid Programs
ELIGIBILITY: To be eligible for Federal financial aid, a student must:
- Demonstrate financial need (except for certain loans)
- Be a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen with a valid Social Security number.
- Be admitted into an eligible degree or certificate program.
- Have a high school diploma or GED; pass an ability-to-benefit test; complete a high school education in a home school setting.
- Register with the Selective Service, if male between the ages of 18 and 25.
- Maintain satisfactory academic progress once in school.

Eligibility for need-based financial aid programs is determined using the data from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA may be filled out and submitted online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov. Paper copies of the FAFSA are available from college and university financial aid offices or high school guidance offices.
Federal Programs Available to LTC Students
- Pell Grant
- A Pell Grant does not have to be repaid. Pell Grants are awarded to undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor’s or a professional degree. The amount that you are eligible for will depend on financial need and your costs to attend school, your status as a full-time or part-time student, and your plans to attend school for a full academic year or less.
- Application: FAFSA
- Maximum award: $4,310
- Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)
- This program is for undergraduate students with exceptional financial need. Pell Grant recipients with the lowest expected family contributions (EFCs) will be considered first for a FSEOG. This grant does not have to be repaid. The amount that you are eligible for will depend on your financial need.
- Application: FAFSA
- Award ranges from $100 to $800 per year
- Federal Work-Study
- Federal Work-Study (FWS) provides part-time jobs for students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay education expenses. The program encourages community service work and work related to the recipient’s course of study. Students are typically allowed to work up to 20 hours per week during the school year and 35 hours in the summer.
- Application: FAFSA
- Academic Competitiveness Grant
- The ACG is available for first year students who graduated from high school after January 1, 2006 and for second year students who graduated from high school after January 1, 2005. The ACG award is in addition to the student’s Pell Grant. An eligible student must be:
- U.S. Citizen;
- Be a Federal Pell Grant recipient;
- Have completed a rigorous secondary school program of student;
- If a first-year students, not have been previously enrolled in an undergraduate program; and
- If a second-year student, have at least a cumulative 3.0 grade point average for the first academic year.
- Application: FAFSA and determination of eligibility by the financial aid office.
- Maximum Award: $750 for first-year and up to $1,300 for second-year
