How to Search the ProQuest Databases

Note: Depending upon the specific database chosen, some screen shots may differ slightly.

Accessing ProQuest
(LTC home –> Current Students –> Library Services –> Online Databases)
Select the desired Proquest collection.
Enter your individual LTC account number.

Choosing a Collection
Opening ProQuest will list all the available ProQuest databases that LTC offers. Clicking on a specific title will select only that database. To select more than one, check the boxes for all that are desired and click "Continue".

Search Screen: Basic Search

The catalog will do a keyword search unless you specify one of the other choices listed.

Enter word, words, or phrase that you are searching for. ProQuest will do a keyword search for those word(s). Click on "Search Tips" or "Browse Topics" to help you form your search query.

You may limit your search by checking one or both of the following boxes.

"Full text articles only" will only retrieve articles that will show the entire text of the article, in HTML or PDF format, or both. It will skip results that only offer abstracts or citations to the article.

"Peer reviewed" articles are documents selected only from publications that have been reviewed, edited, and approved by recognized experts in the relevant field of study.

The "More Search Options" tab enables a more specific search with known information.

Hit the yellow "Search" button to start your search.

The "Advanced Search" tab will allow several types of terms to be searched simultaneously. The same options for "Limit results" or "More search options" apply. Hit the yellow "Search" button to start your search.

A list of articles matching your search criteria will appear. Citation information (Title, author, title of journal, pages, etc.) is given for each one. Under each citation is a symbol indicating how much of the original article can be retrieved.

Clicking in the box in front of any title puts that article on a list in the "My Research" tab to review later.

Click on the desired title or the icon to retrieve the article.

The screen will display however much of the article is allowed through copyright agreements. If full text is not available on-screen, you may request the item through interlibrary loan.

Finding More

The "Topics" tab will assist in finding alternate search terms or phrases.

The "Publications" tab will give information about each individual publication that contributes articles to the database.

If desired, you may choose a different "Interface Language" which will roughly translate the article to a desired language. (Not all databases are equipped to do this)

The "My Research" tab will allow you to:

Alerts, E-mailing, Printing, Etc.
Set up Alert icon"Set up Alert" icon in the "Results Screen" will enable an e–mail to be sent to the searcher whenever additional articles matching your search terms are added to the database. An alert can also be set up to send an email to the searcher anytime a new issue of a specific journal is published.

RSS Feed symbol"Create an RSS Feed" allows you to create an RSS feed, which will automatically notify you of new documents matching your search. Your RSS feed will expire after three months if it has not been viewed.

To "E-Mail" or "Print" the article, choose the yellow buttons at the top or bottom of the article. Follow directions on the screens. "Copy link" shows a durable link to the article, and "Cite this" will formulate the correct citation form for bibliographies.
