LTC and NEWAHEC to train high school nursing assistants

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
02/11/08

CLEVELAND, WI
Lakeshore Technical College has received grants to train 10 high school nursing assistants. The grants are from the Northeastern Wisconsin Area Health Education Center and the Wisconsin Technical College System.

The funding covers nursing assistant course expenses, including tuition and fees, textbooks, equipment and clinical supplies and a uniform allowance. (Some costs for admission requirements, however, are not covered.)

The course uses video, classroom and laboratory learning and includes a clinical rotation at North Ridge Care Center, a Manitowoc nursing home. Upon course completion, students are eligible to take the state certification exam and work as nursing assistants.

The nursing assistant course offers students committed to a health care career the opportunity to begin their education and obtain work experience while still in high school. The training may benefit any student considering a health career and fulfills one of the requirements of most nursing schools.

The course will be held at the Manitowoc County Job Center, 3733 Dewey St., from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays from April 15 to June 10, with the last class on Wed., June 25. The clinical rotation at North Ridge Care Center, 1445 North 7th St., will meet from 2 p.m. – 10 p.m. June 16 – 18 and June 23 – 24.

NEWAHEC, located in Manitowoc, is one of 500 centers nationwide that addresses critical issues in access to health care for the underserved population. One of its major focuses is the education of current and future health care professionals.
