| FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 02/19/08 CLEVELAND, WI– Lakeshore Technical College is holding caregiver training classes at the Cleveland campus in March. The classes are part of a Caregiver Training Series that spans January through November. Participants will earn continued education hours for each class they complete. The fee per class session is based on the number of class hours. “Disaster Preparedness for Community Based Residential Facilities and Nursing Homes” will be held March 11 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the Sheboygan County Training Room in the Lakeshore Building. The class number is 25474, and the fee is $23. The registration deadline is March 4. The seminar will address the specific skills personnel need for a facility to continue to provide continuous care during emergency situations for a period of up to 72 hours. This is the expected time frame in which local, state and federal emergency response agencies should be able to take over management of the source of the emergency or be able to provide additional support to the facility. Types of potential emergencies that necessitate this type of training include pandemic outbreaks of disease, natural or technological disasters and terrorist attacks. While the probability of each type of emergency varies greatly, the skills and procedures for responding to each type are standardized and measured. The seminar also will highlight three upcoming progressive emergency response courses for healthcare professionals. The seminar is recommended for CBRF and nursing home personnel, including directors of nursing, administrators, managers/supervisors, nursing assistants, CBRF caregivers, medication assistants, and dietary, human resources and maintenance personnel. LTC Emergency Management Associate Program Coordinator and Public Safety Instructor John Hanson will be the presenter. Hanson is an emergency management specialist and hazardous materials technician and has served active duty in the United States Air Force and Wisconsin Air National Guard. He also has worked as a readiness manager at Los Angeles Air Force Base and was responsible for the base emergency preparedness program. “Medication and Treatment In-service” will be held March 19 from 9 a.m. to noon in the Manitowoc County Training Room in the Lakeshore Building. The class number is 25379, and the fee is $31. The registration deadline is March 12. The in-service will provide a refresher for caregivers who have previously taken a course on medications. It will outline new drugs on the market, specific diseases that require medications, administration techniques and best practice procedures. Non-sterile wound care, dressing changes and transdermal patches also will be highlighted, and proper procedures on medication administration will be discussed. The in-service is recommended for CBRF caregivers and medication assistants. Julie Tittl RN, BSN, will be the presenter. Tittl is a Holy Family Memorial Medical Center smoking cessation educator, nursing assistant and advanced nursing assistant instructor, CBRF evaluator, and a previous staff development coordinator and charge nurse.
