Lakeshore Technical College students are preparing income tax returns for free for qualified individuals now through April 15 as part of the Internal Revenue Service’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. The nine students are enrolled in LTC accounting classes and receive no compensation for their services. The program is sponsored by Lakeland College, M&I Bank and VITA. An individual is eligible to receive the free service if his or her total income is less than $40,000, he or she earned all 2007 income in Wisconsin, and he or she is a legal United States resident. Each individual should bring a copy of his or her 2006 federal and state tax returns; all W-2 and 1099 forms; his or her own, spouse’s and dependents’ Social Security cards; a voided check (for direct deposit); and a Wisconsin 2007 property tax bill or a rent certificate signed by the landlord. The tax returns are prepared at the Salvation Army, 710 Pennsylvania Ave., Sheboygan. Appointments will be scheduled for Thursdays, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturdays, 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., along with Tuesday, April 15, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. To make an appointment, call Lakeland College at 920-565-1543, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome but subject to availability.
