About the Career
Having to undergo surgery may cause even the calmest person some anxiety. Being in the care of a well-trained and highly qualified surgical team helps to relieve that anxiety. Surgical technologists perform specific functions in the operating room under the direction and continuous supervision of professional nurses and surgeons. If you work well under pressure, are attentive to detail, have good manual dexterity, enjoy science, and are a team player, becoming a surgical technologist may be a great fit for your talents.

Career Outlook
According to the Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment is expected to grow through the year 2010 as the volume of surgery increases. The number of surgical procedures is expected to rise as the population grows and ages. As the “baby boom” generation enters retirement age, the over 50 population will account for a larger portion of the general population. Technological advances, such as fiber optics and laser technology, will also permit new surgical procedures to be performed.
