FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CLEVELAND, WI –
Lakeshore Technical College kicked-off its LTC Promise scholarship program at Sheboygan South High School before students and staff on September 28.
Beginning with the class of 2017, the LTC Promise scholarship offers eligible high school seniors in the Lakeshore community the opportunity to attend college by helping them access financial resources and enroll at LTC. The LTC Promise scholarship will fund the balance of tuition and fees for eligible students after federal and state grants have been applied.
LTC Foundation Board Member Jim Gallimore announced the new scholarship program as an effort to expand student access to LTC regardless of financial means.
“Although most students who apply for federal financial aid do receive some type of assistance, often it is not enough to make college a reality for everyone who wants to pursue an education,” Gallimore told the audience. “The LTC Promise scholarship is an investment in promising students like you.”
The kick-off event included guest speaker Karyna Kaminski, a second-year student at LTC, who said she had swept her dream of going to college and becoming a computer programmer under the rug because she was afraid of drowning herself in debt.
“I was in the same shoes that many of you might be in right now: hesitating about going to college because of financial barriers,” she said. “But after getting burnt out working retail and fast food, I realized I needed to invest in myself and get my degree so I could pursue that dream.”
Kaminski said that a scholarship made it possible for her to realize her ambitions and she encourage the Sheboygan South students to not give up their dreams because resources like the LTC Promise scholarship can make them possible.
After the announcement, Sheboygan South Principal Mike Trimberger expressed his excitement about the scholarship.
"This is exciting news for every school-age child in Sheboygan” Trimberger said. “The cost of college is a growing issue and the LTC Promise Scholarship gives us an additional tool to help our students fulfill their goals."
To qualify for the LTC Promise scholarship students must meet the following criteria in addition to other requirements: complete the FAFSA to determine if they meet the need-based requirement; select a program at LTC which is financial-aid eligible; and have a minimum GPA of 2.0 or higher, a minimum composite ACT score of 16 and a high school attendance record of at least 90%.
